Now we are just past the first 100 days of this new Trump presidency, what are some of the signs that the world's appetite to invest, study or vacation in the US are being impacted by tariffs and the deconstruction of US government institutions?
According to a range of trusted authorities whose latest research and statistics give us a strong indication, we know:
- International students for US universities are not only having second thoughts, they're looking at other countries, especially the UK
- International employees in the US with green cards working on assignment fear leaving the US on vacation or for business given some have not been readmitted
- Arrivals of non-US citizens to the US are down by more than 10% in March 2025 from the year before
- Goldman Sachs estimates that the hit in 2025 from reduced travel and boycotts could total 0.3% of GDP, equal to $90 billion
- $20 billion in retail spending from international tourists in the US now at risk per Bloomberg Intelligence
- Now, based on new forward-booking data analyzed by OAG, a global travel data provider, summer flight bookings on Canada-U.S. routes are down more than 70% year-on-year
- The WTO expects a 13% global export reduction from US/Canada/Mexico based on the tariffs announced on April 2nd – the only region in the world where both export AND import volumes would drop this year
- Many non-US companies are looking at investing in other economies, lowering the US on their priority lists for international expansion
- Most non-US companies are making contingency plans for issuing debt in their home currencies rather than in US Dollars or even in the US
- France's President Macron has urged companies in the county to pause their US investments while the EU works out its response to tariffs
- California Governor Newsom is suing the Trump administration over the tariffs from its position as the 4th largest global economy
So with the frequent tariff policy changes, Dollar volatility and international visitors and students not feeling welcome, the US has a lot to do to restore trust around the world and rebuild its relationships with allies near and far.
Without doing so, America and its citizens will pay a heavy price economically, socially and governmentally.
